I loved seeing the characters interact with their opposing Earths because I had seen the Crime Syndicate on the League's earth in the Forever Evil stuff in New 52, but I don't recall seeing the League on the Syndicate's earth. Lionel raised Lex with his adopted son, Clark and his younger daughter, Tess Luthor, training each of them to be his heir and pitting them against one another in the hopes that one of them would prove a worthy successor to his empire, but Lionel hoped that Clark would prove the most worthy. Morrison's writing is usually a grab bag of "love it or hate it" and but this graphic was just a middle ground of indifference on my part. Doesn't change a whole lot in the scheme of things, though. Super-Woman 1.6. Morrison really perplexes me how he can write such great stories, then throw something absolutely bizarre at you the next time out. The plot was really interesting and I couldn't really put it down (it helps that it was so brief). -Based on: Scott's review, Sam Quixote's review, Mike's review, Martin's review, and Mike's review JLA: Earth 2 is Grant Morrison’s take on one of the classic plots of science fiction and superhero stories, the “Mirror Universe”, where good is evil, evil is good, and everything is backwards. JLA: Earth 2 is arguably the best adventure the Justice League have ever had and is yet another masterpiece from one of the medium’s greatest creative teams, Morrison and Quitely. With it, I discovered both Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, frequent collaborators who would produce some of the best comics over the following years (I'm thinking of, among others, New X-Men, Vol. It's the mirror-mirror episode of Star Trek with the Justice League. From Ultraman to Owlman the evil versions of the JLA are twisted and darkly amusing. It had a very nineties look to it, if that makes any sense. Swayed by Luthor's desperation and the plight of the antimatter Earth's populace, several of the Justice League members travel to the antimatter Earth. The contrast between the Crime Syndicate and the Justice League was nicely done. To readers who are familiar with Morrison’s writing style and might be a little gunshy: Earth 2 is one of his “sober” comics. It amounts to a tale that is not as easily followed as it could be. I love how Morrison doesn’t feel like he has to use every member of the League every time (take note Geoff Johns!). That’s great! To me, that has the effect of rendering the story's conclusion predictable and/or unsatisfying. each of the villains is the happily evil equivalent of various Justice Leaguers. Batman had to rescue his girlfriend Julie Madison from the vampires The Mon… Firstly, it was somewhat difficult to follow the story, especially closer to the end. 5: Forever Heroes, and I what I know, I definitely don't like. Finding Luthor to be at the heart of the matter, the Justice League confronts him and are shown that he is not the man they know, but his counterpart from this "reverse" world. And that wasn't the only surprising thing. Season 2 of the Flash revolves around breaches to Earth 2 being open so I decided to read about Earth 2. A few other flaws ruined the fun for me, particularly the bizarrely rushed ending and the character artwork -- seriously, why does everyone have a monstrously huge jawline? I said it out loud and the earth didn't stop spinning or anything. 2 #13 Justice League Vol. The overall impression is still excellent, the An excellent mirror universe episode of the JLA. I think my biggest problem with this comic wasn't the writing or story-line but rather the mediocre art. Imagine! I am not talking about the new CW one but rather John Wesley Shipp's Flash from back when. It helps that Frank Quitely - in my mind the greatest superhero comics artist working today - draws the hell out of this book. Loved the storyline, the artworks, the twists and the black humour. Earth 3 was actually the earth where good was evil, etc… * Batman: Owlman The Crime Syndicate's personal fulfillment for open control cannot be fulfilled on the Justice League's Earth as exemplified by Owlman's vendetta against his father Thomas Wayne, who is dead on Justice League Earth. Justice League Vol. Then there are a few moments that feel like cheap laughs for shock value, and I realize that Morrison has certainly grown as a writer (or maybe just didn't like the gig writing for gimmicks). Both teams find that they are unable to fulfill their own goals on the others' Earth. From this beginning, Morrison crafts an interesting story about the clash of the JLA and the Syndicate, mixing in a few twists and turns that really dash our heroes hopes and plans. I read Forever Evil and Justice League Vol. JLA: Earth 2 pretty much ignores all of that. Remember the mirror universe episode of Star Trek where Spock had the goatee? So my review will more focus on what didn't. But that’s setting a pretty low bar. Superwoman is a little more developed in this than in Justice League, Vol. JLA: Earth-2 is a one-shot with a cover date of January, 2000. Talk about hot and cold. Some of my favourite scenes: Owlman operating in his Gotham City, the Crime Syndicate’s Watchtower hovering over the city, the opening plane sequence, and Green Lantern’s prison for the Crime Syndicate. Owlman 1.4. When the Syndicate escapes and makes its way to the JLA's Earth, the carnage goes off the chart. So Morrison basically has a free hand to do whatever he feels like. "JLA: Earth-2" I haven't kept up with comics for over ten years, but I used to be avid about them. I should probably start by stating my shock at this book. It is however, a shame that I read Forever Evil before I read this. Evil Green Lantern is a sycophantic coward. A rocket crashes in the countryside and out climbs... Lex Luthor? Book Info: This collection contains JLA: Earth-2 issue #1. I've loved any Morrison/Quitely collaboration I've gotten my hands on up to this point, with this crossworlds arc no exception- there's just not enough of it! Owlman is like a demon-possessed Batman (or maybe if Batman was the Antichrist). [When I revisited that panel to see if maybe I was overreacting, I noticed Green Lantern on the opposite page, back arched as far as humanly possible, ass out, wearing nothing but a single coat of body paint. Superman 1.7. When Alexander Luthor escapes from his world, and onto Earth-2, he seeks out the JLA's assistance in taking on the Crime Syndicate of Amerika (an evil version of the JLA). Though I would advise reading it before Forever Evil to get the most out of it. Loved the storyline, the artworks, the twists and the black humour. Superwoman is a little more developed in this than in Justice League, Vol. That said, I think one of the most notable flaws here had to do with the story's goofy premise. The second issue with the pacing has to do with reader engagement. Most intriguing are the different backgrounds of the five core members of the Crime Syndicate, and seeing what parts of the mirror universe are flipped and how; sadly the story focuses a bit too much on Batman (go figure!) To name one, instead of becoming Batman, the "Bruce Wayne" of that world becomes the thoroughly twisted "Owlman," who fights against his father Thomas Wayne, the police commissioner. Ultraman Other … It is basically a stand alone story (though Kurt Busiek would trot it back out later), written at a time when DC had dispensed with all of this multi-verse nonsense. Christ! And although its hurried narrative can be, at times disorienting, the art's fantastic, and the story manages to be edgy, fun, and keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. And although its hurried narrative can be, at times disorienting, the art's fantastic, and the story manages to be edgy, fun, and keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Both teams decide to return to their source Earths. I think that the science seems too implausible (or at least was so nebulously explained, I didn't believe it was plausible), and I didn't get how the day was saved in the end. Some of the "opposite" stuff is clever, creative (how each of the Crime Syndicate came to their powers); some of it is just plain terrible (US history, bobbies with guns, Jimmie Olson, high-tar cigarettes advertising). I've near been a dedicated comic reader so until recently I knew next to nothing about Earth 2. I think any Morrison fan will love this story, as will anyone who likes a good Justice League tale. Morrison really perplexes me how he can write such great stories, then throw something absolutely bizarre at you the next time out. There are a few good laughs, that come not at the expense of the anti-world gimmick. 5: Forever Heroes simultaneously, switching back and forth between issues. 1 & All-Star Superman, Vol. I enjoyed the comic but I had to be honest about what is. Then I had to determine where exactly that new place was. * Wonder Woman: Superwoman overall this is a lot of fun. Though I must admit a bit of confusion as to who Owlman was. Justice League International Vol. Marvel did it with Firestar, and here Lois Lane is basically Earth 2 Wonder Woman, not Diana. Super Template Action! Cover Artists Unfortunately, this book also displays the one thing that I have always thought was Morrison's greatest weakness as a writer - cohesion. whenever i see them appear in a comic strip, i am overcome with massive delight-convulsions. ...but I want to explain thie little "mess" since nowadays there is the quite popular "Earth-2" titles published during the "New52" and part of the "Rebirth" era, but that it's about the formerly known "Earth-2" before the Crisis, just with a new angle. Morrison left himself too little time to explore even a quarter of the ideas he hints at here, which made me feel a little shortchanged. 2). Ultraman is a sleazy, psychopathic, cruel bully. well i don't fuckin know, everything's so confusing these days). Danielle The Book Huntress (Back to the Books) The Justice League swaps places with their anti-matter universe counterparts - evil versions of themselves known collectively as "The Crime Syndicate of Amerika" - and the two groups deal with their inverse places by acting as they only know how. Grant Morrison has written a book that, wait for it, wait for it, is an easy read. The plot was interesting and Morrison handled it well. Everyone is wrinkled looking- even the kids and are those bags under everyone's eyes? Yep that's right. It was interesting, kind of fun, but little pointless. On a world that is based off evil is right the Justice league come to fix things. The Justice League cannot save the antimatter Earth as the populace largely accepts the Crime Syndicate as a legitimate entity to their Earth. The Flash 1.4. and plot twists that seem to game the logic of these "morally flipped" worlds. The story is pretty standard super hero fare, although Morrison turns the dial up a few notches. They are the world's gravest super-villains: Ultraman, Owlman, Superwoman, Power Ring and Johnny Quick--the legendary Crime Syndicate of Amerika! Yeah, don’t ask. Bumping this up another half star (from 2.5 to 3 stars). ??? However, the great creative team of Morrison and Quitely give us a great understanding and deep true meaning of how works an antimatter universe, really reasoning what it means that what is "good" here, therefore is "evil" there, and the implications between both parallel dimensions. It looked like this characters would be better suited to clubs and mammoths skins, rather than capes and tights. I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of 90’s comics in general. As those familiar with DC already know, the Crime Syndicate (Ultraman, Superwoman, Owlman, Johnny Quick, and Power Ring) come from Earth-2 (at least at the time of this DC continuity), are the evil counterparts of the JLA, and rule their world with iron fists. In this awesome tale, the infamous Crime Syndicate is re-introduced, updating their costumes and even part of their origin stories, which it was so well received that when they were re-introduced once again during the "New52" on the Forever Evil event, you can notice that the supervillain team has more common with this "in-between" version that its original at the Silver Age.
